5 Reasons Why Summer in Mexico is Annoying

Hola, amigos! Summer is here again, and the classic way to spend the season is to enjoy a sunny beach vacation. Many people think that just because I live in Mexico I get to be surrounded by palm trees and white sand beaches during the summer. Reality check, amigos. Summer is not all sun and fun everywhere in Mexico.

I’m sure that when you think of summer in Mexico, you picture white sandy beaches and pina coladas. Well, that is exactly what you will get if go to Cancun, Los Cabos, or somewhere like that!

Unfortunately, I don’t live anywhere near Cancun or Los Cabos. My own little corner of Mexico is up in a high valley surrounded by mountains, hundreds of miles from the nearest beach.

For me, summer is not the fun, golden season it is meant to be. As a matter of fact, I find the summer a little extremely annoying. These are my very good reasons why!

1. Mexican summer vacation is annoyingly short

In Mexico, the school year ends late and starts way too early. Picture this, my son’s last day in second grade was on July 15th. Yes, really. I have no idea why school ends so late, and it’s not because the kids are busy learning. The last two weeks of school are spent watching movies and doing crafts, because there’s just nothing else to do. Now if that wasn’t bad enough, barely five and a half weeks later, kids are back in school again. Yes, really. It’s frustrating and annoying.

2. Mexican schools are annoying

As if kids didn’t have a short enough vacation, schools recently had the bright idea of giving them homework for the summer. Yes, that really happens! My son got a reading worksheet where I had to fill out the books he read, for how long, and even the number of words involved. That was completely annoying! What’s worse, he also had to work on a review booklet that included math problems and handwriting practice. Try to get a seven-year-old to do homework during the summer! Oh, did I mention the reading worksheet and the finished booklet were required for re-entry to school? Very annoying!

3. My husband’s work calendar is annoying

To make matters worse, my husband doesn’t have vacation at the same time as the kids. He teaches at a university, which has a completely different calendar, because it seems like nobody in Mexico really cares about missing out on the summer. His vacation began in June and ended on July 20th, barely five days after the kids’ last day of school. I bet you can see how annoying this is. Zero time for a family vacation!

4. Mexican summer weather is annoying

Like I said before, summer in Mexico probably gets you thinking about sun and fun, but that’s not what it’s like for the whole country. Here in Mexico City, summer weather is a rainy, windy, chilly, damp nuisance. I admit the days can be sunny and warm sometimes, but that doesn’t last long. Mostly, it just rains. Once, a foreign friend arrived to visit during the summer, and he said Mexico City summer weather reminded him of London. Yes! London!

FYI, it also rains a lot in Mexican beaches during the summer, specially on the Gulf, Pacific, and Caribbean coasts. Check the weather forecast if you’re planning a beach vacation in Mexico during the summer!

5. Not going to the beach is annoying

Of course I would love to get some sea and sun during the summer, but it’s just not happening for me. It doesn’t help looking at other people’s pictures of their vacations on social media, looking so happy and tanned. That is positively annoying! If we want to go to the beach this summer, we’ll have to make a run for it and have the kids miss an entire week of school. It’s very tempting, you know.

Fortunately, I only have to wait a few more months until it’s time for winter vacation, and that’s when I’ll get my sun and fun. After all, it doesn’t matter if you go to the beach in the winter. It never gets cold in Mexico’s beaches!
