The Mysterious Land Of Oaxaca
Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s 32 provinces. It lies in the southeast of the country, about a thousand miles away from the border with the United States. It’s about as deep into Mexico as you can get.
It’s also very ethnically and biologically diverse. There are 16 different ethnic groups in Oaxaca, all with their own different languages and cultural heritage. There are also countless native species of plants and animals. For example, there are more native bird species in Oaxaca than in the entire United States!
Part of what makes Oaxaca so fascinating is that it’s dotted with tall mountains, hidden valleys, and deep gorges, so there isn’t a single characteristic that defines the place. It’s simply diverse. And fascinating.
A Journey Into Oaxaca
These pictures were taken by my husband many years ago when he traveled through the province as a young university student. What makes the pictures so special is that they show details beyond the ordinary sightseeing tours of Oaxaca.
The people and the places you see in the pictures are completely off the beaten path. They’re images of people from different ethnic groups in everyday settings and surroundings. It’s as real as Mexico can get.

The Magic Of Oaxaca
Oaxaca is a magical place waiting to be discovered. The capital, Oaxaca city, offers plenty of picturesque sights, sounds, and flavors.
Oh, the flavors! Take a walk through the market and try some of the legendary black mole or roasted grasshoppers, and you’ll have food memories to last a lifetime!
Tiptoe into the colonial Santo Domingo church and watch centuries-old rituals take place. Take a walk down Oaxaca’s winding streets and catch glimpses of the Zapotec and the Mixe, the ancient cloud people, and maybe even hear bits of their singsong languages.
Dare to take an adventure down to Oaxaca, the land of birds and artists. I bet you’ll fall in love with it.
(That means, “Have a great day!” in Zapotec)
